CSS has played a lead role in paving the way for health care reform in New York State through its participation with Health Care For All New York (HCFANY), a state-wide coalition of more than 170 partner agencies. Health Policy Internship Description:

She/he will play an active role in supporting HCFANY, and will learn about and support all aspects of the policy process, including performing policy research and analysis, developing policy briefs, organizing, and conducting administrative and legislative advocacy. She/he will also support the coalition’s communications strategy, which includes a website, blog, and social media.

This internship provides a hands-on opportunity to participate in advocacy that will directly affect implementation of the Affordable Care Act and other policy initiatives that improve access to quality, affordable public and private health insurance in New York State. The Health Policy Intern will be a key part of the Health Initiatives team and directly engage in health policy work. She/he will work under the Senior Health Policy Associate and with the Vice President of Health Initiatives, the Deputy Director, and other Health Initiatives staff.

Health Communications Internship Description:

The Community Service Society’s Health Initiatives Department conducts cutting-edge policy research and writing, advocacy, and health coverage consumer assistance. There are several projects based in this Department. Health Care For All New York (“HCFANY”) is a statewide coalition of consumer advocacy organizations dedicated to securing access to affordable, comprehensive, and high quality health care for all. Community Health Advocates (“CHA”), New York’s designated health insurance consumer assistance program, helps New Yorkers use health insurance and access care. The CSS Navigator Network (“CNN”) is a statewide network of organizations providing enrollment assistance services for the new health care marketplace, NY State of Health. The Independent Consumer Advocacy Network (“ICAN”) is New York State’s Managed Long Term Care/FIDA Ombudsprogram. Harlem Health Advocacy Partners (“HHAP”) bring CSS’s health insurance enrollment and post-enrollment assistance to individuals residing in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) housing in East and Central Harlem.

This internship provides a hands-on opportunity to participate in advocacy, outreach, and communication efforts that directly affect implementation of the Affordable Care Act in New York State. It is a hybrid position incorporating work with all Health Initiatives programs, and the intern will help with our advocate and consumer material development and review process.  The intern will form part of a dynamic team working to ensure that advocates and consumers are equipped with the information and materials to improve the access and quality of health care for all New Yorkers.

Success Story and Advocacy Internship Description

This internship provides a hands-on opportunity to participate in advocacy and communication efforts that directly affect implementation of the Affordable Care Act in New York State. It is a hybrid position incorporating work with all Health Initiatives programs and the intern will help with our statewide story gathering projects.   Through our story collection, New Yorkers share their experiences with health insurance and the health care system.  The intern will form part of a dynamic team working to ensure New Yorkers’ stories are used effectively to inform others about programs and to advocate for continued improvements in our health insurance system.

  • Interviewing clients, partner agencies and drafting Story Bank content
  • Updating story collection guide and materials
  • Producing multi-media stories
  • Conducting research on New York State health policy
  • Supporting staff with identifying trends and making recommendations for improvements in the health insurance system
  • Participating in other activities and perform other duties as may be required
