Kathy Zoner, a 24-year veteran of the Cornell University Police (CUP), was sworn in as chief of police in 2009, the first woman to serve in that capacity at Cornell. She oversees 50 armed, sworn peace officers with law enforcement powers under New York State Criminal Procedure and Education laws, serving a community of approximately 21,500 students and 9,700 faculty and staff.

Cornell is the first university in New York to be accredited by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) for its law enforcement department. Chief Zoner is an active member of the IACLEA, serving as an Accreditation Commissioner for over four years, and a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
She is the chairperson for the Tompkins County Law Enforcement Administrator’s Group (TCLEAG), which assembles local law enforcement leaders to collaborate on current issues in legislation, policy, training and trends. She regularly provides information and education on the Clery Act to the municipalities within CUP’s geographical area of responsibility.

Chief Zoner served on the Board of Directors for Ithaca Rape Crisis/Center for Crime Victim and Sexual Assault Survivors for over 10 years, spending much of that time as President of the Board. She also serves on Cornell’s Council on Sexual Violence Prevention, Council on Mental Health and Welfare, Council on Hazing Prevention and the President’s Council on Alcohol and other Drugs. She is a member of the University Assembly and serves on its Codes and Judicial Committee; convenes the Public Safety Advisory Committee; and chaired the Diversity Council for Human Resources and Safety Services from 2012 to 2015. She is a founding member of the Alert Team, which serves as the coordinating hub of a network of existing resources, focused on prevention and early intervention in situations involving community members experiencing distress or engaging in harmful or disruptive behaviors.

A graduate of Ohio State University and the FBI National Academy, Chief Zoner is continuing her education at Cornell.
