Student Intern (and Student Volunteer): Student intern is a mentor, first and foremost. The primary role of the student intern is to provide guidance, encouragement and model appropriate behavior to the children who come to Scottie's Place. Intern will help counselors ensure the health and safety of campers and make sure campers have an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Intern will work with counselors to develop and implement program activities and provide support to directors and counselors. Intern will provide a positive role model for children in all aspects of camp life, from conflict resolution to meal preparation, from farm chores to community service projects. Additionally, intern is expected to assist in the setting up and breaking down of camp before and after sessions. Tasks between sessions include building projects, garden work, research and administrative work. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate should be a minimum of 18 years of age, preferably with experience working with special needs populations, especially at-risk and minority youth. Previous wilderness experience – camping, swimming, canoeing, hiking – is highly desirable. Personal qualities include maturity, patience, flexibility, sense of humor, good problem solving and communication skills, initiative, physical stamina and a powerful work ethic. Love for children and a love of the outdoors is a necessity. Because of the challenges posed by wilderness adventure, candidates should be healthy and physically fit. All camp staff at Scottie's Place should possess the following characteristics: belief that one can make a difference in the life of a child ability to work well with children of all ages and interests ability to take charge and motivate others ability to see the opportunity for change that is inherent in crisis and conflict ability to work well in high stress situations and in close proximity with others enthusiasm for living and an appreciation and respect for all races, cultures, religions and abilities.
