Intern Opportunity: Marketing and Outreach The Trust for Governors Island, which manages 150 acres of Governors Island, seeks college or graduate student interns to advance multiple projects that are critical to The Trust’s mission. These projects include executing a wide reaching outreach plan, implementing The Trust’s social media strategy and assisting the Director of Marketing and Communications with an array of projects related to the visibility of the Island and its public access season specifically. The intern will also work closely with the Director of Planning, Design and Construction to update the public on progress being made in construction of the Hills, the culminating feature of the Island’s new park and public spaces. Interns will work on the following:  The Trust is working to target specific populations of New Yorkers who are underserved in terms of access to parks and green spaces or who are otherwise underrepresented in the Island’s visitorship. Interns will identify key populations that do not appear to be represented in the Island’s visitorship and who may not be well served by neighborhood parks. After identifying populations, develop effective ways to reach them and then execute that outreach.  As the Island is opened for only the second year seven days a week from the end of May through the end of September, social media and communicating with the public remains more important than ever. Interns will continue to develop and execute a successful outreach strategy for Governors Island using Facebook, Twitter and the Governors Island blog.  New spaces and opportunities are arising to bring programming to Governors Island with OpenHouseGI, The Trust’s program that offers free space to arts and cultural organizations. Interns will identify and reach out to organizations and groups that may bring unique programming to the Island in future seasons.  During the public season, interns will execute a range of marketing tasks, including but not limited to, sending out press releases, answering some press inquiries and blogging about Island progress.  As the next phase of park and public spaces, the Hills, are under construction, The Trust needs to communicate to the public about this progress. The Trust does so via social media as well as an on-island exhibition. The intern will work to update and maintain the exhibition as well as communicate to the public via social media. The intern should have strong written and verbal communications skills, be able to think creatively and be excited to contribute to the Trust for Governors Island’s mission. He/She should be very familiar with social networking, including, but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, blogs and Flickr. S/he should also have a passion for New York City’s public spaces. Coursework relevant to this position may include planning, marketing and journalism courses, among others. The intern will work on Governors Island. The start date and length of the internship can vary depending on availability of appropriate candidates. Stipends are available for Trust interns. Background Governors Island is a very special place, the Island created by and for New Yorkers. Once off limits to the public, it is now the City’s shared place for art and play. Arriving together by boat, New Yorkers coming to the Island encounter the Statue of Liberty, the Harbor, a unique Historic District, and now a spectacular, new park. More than two dozen historic houses as well as acres of green spaces are filled with arts, cultural, and recreational experiences to discover. New Yorkers come to the Island for eclectic programs, miles of paths for biking and walking, open lawns for picnicking and relaxing, ball fields for play, and breathtaking views. In 2015, Governors Island will be open seven days a week from May 23- September 27. In addition to making the Island a resource for New Yorkers, The Trust is also executing an ambitious capital program which includes major investments in infrastructure. In 2014, The Trust just completed construction on 30 new acres of park. Construction is underway for the next phase of park, the Hills.
