For 50 years, the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (EDC) has mobilized business, government and civic leaders to maximize the region’s economic prosperity and global competitiveness. We serve local companies by providing assistance with expansion plans, programs to help retain businesses, and advocacy for policies that enhance the region’s economic competitiveness. We lead attraction efforts to bring new investment and new companies to the region. EDC collaborates with industry associations and economic development partners to organize cohesive approaches to regional issues. We market the unique assets of our bi-national region. We are a nonprofit corporation funded by more than 150 companies and public partners that are committed to enhancing regional prosperity. Interns gain hands-on experience in the areas of Operations and Administration, Economic Development, Marketing & Communications, and Research and Policy. Additionally, as part of training, interns have the opportunity to attend meetings, workshops, conferences, and informational programs to broaden their general exposure to the overall economic development concept.

Location: San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, 530 B Street, 7th Floor, San Diego, CA 92101

Job Purpose: To gain hands-on and professional experience in the fields of business and economic development, as well as interact with regional businesses, industry/trade organizations and all levels of government entities.

Key Responsibilities and Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Economic Development

  • Perform research as needed for Request for Information (RFI) and/or Request for Proposals (RFP)
  • Collect and maintain market and demographic data on a local, state, national, and international scale
  • Collect and maintain data on target industries and companies in San Diego County and/or the Mega-Region (San Diego County, Imperial County and Northern Baja California)
  • Conduct outreach to companies for specific case studies
  • Assist in the policy research and analysis
  • Review all media channels on a local, state, and national scale and maintain a list stories on company expansions, closures, new investment, merger and acquisitions, etc.


  • Track legislation and dockets, and research issues related to EDC’s policy focus
  • Attend San Diego City Council, community, and committee meetings
  • Brief senior staff on regional policy issues
  • Write background pieces, fact sheets and other news-related information, as well as meeting notes and other written materials Track legislation and dockets, and research issues related to EDC’s policy focus

Investor Relations

  • Maintain Investor database
  • Research prospects for investment
  • Perform mailings

Marketing & Communications

  • Review all media channels on a local, state, and national scale and maintain a list of San Diego and/or Mega-Region mentions
  • Review all media channels on a local, state, and national scale and maintain a list success stories of San Diego and/or Mega-Region companies and/or industries
  • Draft blog posts
  • Screen and track media hits
  • Research potential speaking and awards opportunities
  • Compile social media calendar

General Office Administration

  • Assist with front desk in answering phones
  • Assist with “walk-ins”
  • Assist with errands and general office work
  • Assist with logistics of meeting planning and execution
  • May occasionally perform special projects as assigned by the Accounting Team


  • Assist with logistics of event execution
  • Attend meetings and events


  • An interest in policy, government, business development and/or economics
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75
  • Current graduate, senior or junior-level students preferred, but will consider other class levels and recent graduate
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team
  • Must exercise flexibility, initiative, good judgment and discretion
  • Good organizational, time management, customer service and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in software programs such as iStudio, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop , Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Office, and CMS and CRM systems a plus


  • All EDC internships are unpaid, unless otherwise agreed upon.
  • Academic credit can be arranged but it is the responsibility of the student to coordinate and complete the necessary paperwork with their attending university.
  • Upon successful completion of this internship interns may request a letter of recommendation on behalf of the San Diego Regional EDC Internship program.


  • Parking will be provided to interns during the duration of the internship.


  • Summer internships are part-time positions with a required minimum commitment of 12 weeks (16-20 hours per week), or unless otherwise agreed upon with Supervisors.
  • Current students, foreign students, recent graduates and doctoral students are encouraged to apply. However, EDC is currently unable to sponsor J-1 visas to foreign students looking to participate in an exchange program.
